At New Place Nursery the liner production is carried out mainly under polythene structures. The company is one of the largest producers of liners and trees in the UK.

Mike Norris went on to say "The plants grow extremely well under the coating as air and water can pass easily through and we find that this is a very cost effective way of producing plants, clear of weeds and produces a very attractive finish". "It costs us less than 2p per 9cm container, which is extremely cost effective compared to other forms of control and also leads to cleanliness of product at point of despatch”.
“The product, which is based on a Pinus maritimus bark with an organic binder, is activated when irrigated and forms a weed barrier layer of 1cm depth, which also looks aesthetically attractive on the plant container and helps to reduce water loss by around 15%” Mike stated.
After potting the pots are taken by conveyor and the bark is dispensed through a “bark topper" after which they are then conveyed through a watering tunnel and then taken to the standing beds. After 15 minutes the binder will react with the bark and create a fixed weed control barrier.
Tref Top Control is supplied in 25kg bags and is now being trialled by four major nurseries throughout the UK on containerised production up to 5 litres.
